I chose the bowl form because it is very simple and functional. With some of my bowls I am primarily interested in addressing formal issues. I am trying to get down to the basics of shape, texture, and edge. Subtle differences in shape affect the meaning of the piece dramatically: an open form is generous and a tighter one more austere and self-sufficient.
Many of the bowls are part of a series that is addressing the idea of essential human needs. The bowl is a very simple, functional form used for storage, preparation, and presentation of almost everything. Bowls can also serve as a surface for decoration or aesthetic expression, another human requirement. These bowls show their history of use in the combination of ornamentation and rough surfaces.
